Walter Lawson of Roanoke was the outstanding coach. He coaches basketball, softball and soccer.
Barbara Quarles, an ice skater from Vinton, was the outstanding athlete. She was a member of the Virginia Ice Skating team in the 1993 International Special Olympics in Austria.
Paul, Judy, Gary and Dana Hylton of Salem received the outstanding family honor. Paul and Judy Hylton are volunteers, and their son, Gary, is involved in basketball, bowling, and equestrian sports. Their daughter, Dana, is a bowler.
Gary Gwynn, a coach and volunteer from Franklin County, received the Spirit of Special Olympics award, and Don Lazenby from Rocky Mount was the outstanding volunteer.
Area 8, which serves the Roanoke Valley and Botetourt, Craig and Franklin counties, also recognized several several companies and individuals for for their contributions. They are: Allstate Insurance, North Cross School, Toys R Us, Tweeds, C&P Telephone, Viking Lanes, Roanoke Fruit and Produce, Civitan Club of Roanoke, Betty Lee and Howard Nash.
Former Roanoker gets honor in Tennessee
Louise Hall Zirkle, a native of Roanoke, was recently selected as the Alpha Beta Council's 1994 First Lady of Knoxville in Tennessee.
The council is the governing body of a group of 10 Beta Sigma Phi adult sororities that focus their efforts on volunteerism and charity.
Zirkle was honored for her extensive volunteer efforts, including her work with the American Red Cross, board tenures on the Teen Board of Knoxville and the Knoxville Symphony. She also worked to inform the public on health awareness and women's safety issues through her affiliation with the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Auxiliary and the Tennessee Medical Association Auxiliary.
Zirkle and her husband, George, also a former Roanoke resident, moved to Knoxville 44 years ago.
