HIGHLANDERS, WILKEY TOP FLAMES 80-70

Shannan Wilkey scored 27 points and Radford University made a Big South Conference tournament-record 31 of 49 free-throw attempts as the Highlanders dropped Liberty University 80-70 on Thursday in a quarterfinal at the Spartan Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Wilkey made 11 of 15 free throws and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead third- seeded Radford (16-11) into a semifinal at 6 p.m. today against second-seeded Maryland-Baltimore County. The Retrievers beat Coastal Carolina 63-44 in another quarterfinal Thursday.

The Flames (13-14) were whistled for a tournament-record 35 fouls, and five Liberty players fouled out, two with more than 11 minutes remaining.

With 3 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the first half, the Highlanders held a 34-32 lead. But Wilkey scored six consecutive points to fuel a 10-2 spurt, and Radford led 44-34 at halftime. Sixth-seeded Liberty never got closer than nine points in the second half.

Radford's Nicole Gardiner and Samantha Gilbert, both of New Zealand, combined for 29 points and 13 rebounds.

Ginny Coleman led Liberty with 25 points.

In Thursday's other Big South quarterfinals, North Carolina-Greensboro edged North Carolina-Asheville 77-74 and Towson State slipped past Campbell 65-64. UNC Greensboro will meet Towson State in today's 8 p.m. semifinal.

George Mason 68, UNC Wilmington 55: In Harrisonburg, Marcell Harrison scored 28 points to lead the Patriots (20-10) to a quarterfinal victory over the Seahawks (5-22).

Second-seeded George Mason will meet third-seeded James Madison, an 80-52 winner over American, in a semifinal today. Kelly Horton and Jill Longordo each scored 10 for seventh-seeded UNC Wilmington.

\ James Madison 80, American 52: Sarah Schreib had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Dukes (16-11) to a quarterfinal rout of the Eagles (8-19).

Third-seeded James Madison held sixth-seeded American to 31 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers. Sixth-seeded American was led by Becky Greenfield's 14 points.

\ Old Dominion 87, East Carolina 45: Celeste Hill scored 16 points as the Monarchs (22-5) overpowered the Pirates (2-24) in a quarterfinal.

Hill, one day earlier voted the CAA's player of the year, also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals as top-seeded Old Dominion advanced to a semifinal today against William and Mary, a 76-62 winner over Richmond.

Tomekia Blackmon led eighth-seeded East Carolina with 11 points.

\ William and Mary 76, Richmond 62: Ashleigh Akens and Marilyn Gayton led a dominating inside game that sent the Tribe (20-7) past the Spiders (16-11) in a quarterfinal.

Akens had 26 points and 16 rebounds and Gayton added 17 points and 16 rebounds as fourth-seeded William and Mary advanced to a semifinal today against Old Dominion.

The Tribe had a 50-36 rebounding advantage and limited fifth-seeded Richmond to 10 offensive rebounds.

Aquedine Khasidis added 17 points for William and Mary.

Richmond got 12 points from Denise Winn and 10 from Patience Jones.
