In Deland, Fla., Bryce Gammon pitched Virginia Tech's first complete game of the season as the Hokies defeated Evansville 6-4 in the Stetson Invitational.
In a non-tournament game Friday night, Tech found a way to defeat previously unbeaten Pittsburgh: Use David Fitt.
The sophomore first baseman drove in six runs as the Hokies beat the Panthers 7-4. Fitt put Tech up 3-0 with a three-run homer in the fourth inning, but the Panthers came storming back, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth.
Fitt came to bat in the eighth inning with the bases loaded, and his triple drove in three runs. He scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Kevin Barker.
Chris Freeman pitched four innings of hitless relief for the Hokies (5-6), winners of five of their past seven games. Pittsburgh (5-1) had only three hits.
In the tournament game, Gammon (1-1) gave up eight hits, struck out nine and walked two. The senior right-hander held Evansville (2-6) to two hits in the last five innings.
The Hokies resume tournament play at 3 p.m. today with a game against Stetson. Tech has clinched at least second place in the tournament with a 4-1 record and could earn at least a share of the title with a victory over Stetson.
