Duke, the only school under 300 with a 296, held a five-shot lead over UNC Charlotte. Virginia Tech was tied for fourth place with a 308 in the 20-team field.
Chris Winchip of Winthrop shot a 2-under par 70 to take a two-shot lead over three players. Tech's Brian Sharp fired a 74, tied for ninth. The Hokies' Curtis Deal shot a 75, Sean Farrell had a 77 and Matt Martin fired an 82.
The tournament runs through Sunday.
The inaugural Valley Four-Ball Classic golf tournament will be played April 9-10 at Hunting Hills Country Club. Entry fee for the two-man best-ball tournament is $95 per team, cart included. The field will be limited to the first 48 entries.
The 36-hole gross tournament will be divided into eight flights after the first round. The top three finishers in each flight will win prizes. Entry blanks are available at all area clubs. For information, call Hunting Hills' head professional, Roby Roberson, at 774-4429.
