SPRING CLEANUP COMES ALONG AT GOOD TIME

With two ice storms leaving in their wake untold numbers of torn and shattered trees, Blacksburg's annual Spring Cleanup takes on added importance this year.

The cleanup will begin Monday and last through April 7, when town crews will pick up bulky materials not included in regular trash pickup.

That includes refrigerators, old couches, mattresses and the like in one category. Tires, garbage and other items weighing more than 100 lbs. will not be picked up. Hazardous materials, chemical products and batteries also will not be collected

In the other category goes tree limbs, brush and other yard waste. Limbs should be no longer than 7 feet and no greater than 4 inches in diameter.

The town asks that the two groups be separated when placed by the curb.

Town crews will visit four different quadrants of the town at separate intervals over the next three and a half weeks. If it's impossible to pick up all the brush, crews will return after each quadrant has been visited once.
