TECH SEVENTH, DUKE FIRST IN TOURNAMENT

Cool and breezy conditions kept scores low Saturday in the second round of the East Carolina/Sheraton-Emerald Intercollegiate golf tournament in New Bern, N.C.

Duke holds an eight-shot lead over second-place UNC Charlotte. Virginia Tech is seventh in the 20-team field after shooting an 18-over par 288 on the 6,924-yard, par-72 course.

Duke's Mike Mueher and UNC Charlotte's Paul Carpenter are tied for first with a 1-over par 145. Curtis Deal is low for Tech, tied for fifth with a 5-over par 149.

Deal shot a 74, Saturday, Brian Sharp and Sean Farrell shot 77s, and David Haven shot a 78. The tournament concludes today.
