VOLVO, UNION REACH AGREEMENT ON NEW CONTRACT

Local negotiators for the United Auto Workers and Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp. reached a tentative agreement Sunday afternoon.

Details of the agreement were withheld pending discussion at a ratification meeting, said Karl Mantyla, a negotiator with UAW.

Generally, the proposed new contract deals with everything from wages to work conditions inside the plant.

If ratified, the proposed pact would cover about 1,100 workers at the New River Valley manufacturing facility.

The previous agreement was scheduled to expire at midnight Friday, but was extended indefinitely by the company and the union because negotiations were progressing smoothly, Mantyla said.

The ratification meeting is expected to be held next weekend.
