SOUTHWEST VA. SUBJECT OF APRIL 2 SYMPOSIUM

A symposium on the history and culture of Southwest Virginia will be held April 2 at Virginia Highlands Community College.

The keynote address will be by Appalachian scholar Ronald Eller of the University of Kentucky, whose book "Miners, Millhands and Mountaineers: The Industrialization of the Appalachian South" was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

Jean Haskell Speer, director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University, will give a luncheon address on "The Culture of Southwest Virginia in a Global Context."

Another participant will be Crandall Shifflett, professor of history at Virginia Tech, who has published books on life in Appalachia.
