He has been taken out of the intensive care unit.
The well-known painter was admitted to the hospital March 7 after suffering an apparent heart attack in the sauna at his Roanoke County home and serious burns when he collapsed against hot pipes.
Longtime Solonevich friend Ed Ewing, who is acting as spokesman for the 79-year-old artist and his family, said he expects Solonevich to be released from Roanoke Memorial in about a week, though the burns will require extensive long-term treatment.
"He's doing pretty darn good," considering the seriousness of his injuries, Ewing said.
Because of deep mud and other weather-related obstacles on the road to Solonevich's mountain home, it took rescue personnel and neighbors nearly two hours to reach the Moscow-born artist and get him out to the hospital.
Ewing described their efforts as "heroic."
