SPIDERS RALLY, BEAT RADFORD

Richmond scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat host Radford 9-6 in a college baseball game Tuesday.

Highlanders' shortstop Kelly Dampeer, who had two doubles and two RBI, gave Radford a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double that drove in two runs. However, singles by Tom Scioscia and P.J. McGrory, a double by John Dorman and a sacrifice fly by Gerald Dorman in the top of the seventh gave the Spiders (10-3) the lead for good.

Radford (6-5) got two runners on base in the ninth, but couldn't score.

Richmond's Jim Durick improved to 2-1 this season with the win, and Henry Ogden got the save in relief. Kevin Cowden got the loss for Radford in relief of starter Jay Hensley.

In other college baseball:

Old Dominion pounded out 25 hits as it scored a 17-5 win over VMI in Norfolk.

Robert Morgan and Jason Riley each slammed three-run home runs to lead the Monarchs (14-2). The two had three hits and three RBI apiece.

Freshman Brett Wheeler got the win for the Monarchs, striking out seven in eight innings of work.

VMI (9-7) was led by David Groseclose's two hits and four RBI.

Eastern Mennonite scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past Washington and Lee 15-12 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.

Washington and Lee (3-6-1, 1-2) took an 11-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after sending 12 men to theplate. The Royals scored three times in the sixth off two errors, three in the seventh, then tied the score in the eighth on another Generals' error before taking the lead in the ninth when Washington and Lee's Matt Reedy overthrew first base with one out.

Rob Boston took the loss for the Generals.

At Ferrum, the Panthers rapped 22 hits off six pitchers en route to a 25-0 baseball shellacking of Curry College.

Matt Smith was 4-for-5 with five runs batted in and Chad Maddox had four hits and two RBI for Ferrum (5-2).

Kevin Anderson (1-1) was the winning pitcher.

Virginia's baseball team will travel to Harrisonburg to play James Madison in a make-up game today at 3 p.m.
