School Board Chairman James Cady told the supervisors that even though the 1994-95 is high he believes it is well-deserved considering advances the school system has made in the last several year.
John M. Lee, vice chairman of the supervisors, said he hopes enough funds will be available to accept the $3,367,172 school budget as is. But, Lee said, finances are tight and cuts may be necessary.
More than $1 million will come from the county, and the rest of the budget will come from state and federal sources.
The schools also will get another $312,781 from the state sales tax and $6,500 from other sources, mainly the sale of surplus equipment.
Cady called the proposed school budget "stripped down" even though it is larger than last year's.
On another matter, the supervisors decided to use a technical maneuver so an eighth-grade civics class could meet with the board during school hours. The supervisors had sought advice from County Attorney James Cornwell on changing their meeting time so the eighth-graders could attend a meeting.
Cornwell told the supervisors they could recess and continue one of their regular meetings to a time suitable for the class. The board has decided to continue their April 19 meeting until 2 p.m. May 2 to meet with the the students. The regular board meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. that day.
