TECH EVENS ITS RECORD IN BASEBALL

Virginia Tech's baseball team, rebounding from a slow start, reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 5-4 victory over Marshall in Blacksburg on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hokies (7-7) led 4-1 behind the strong pitching of Bryce Gammon (2-1) after six innings. The Thundering Herd (4-7) scored two runs off Gammon in the seventh, but Tech added an insurance run in the eighth. Freshman reliever Charlie Gillian picked up his third save by pitching the ninth.

Center fielder Popeye Smith led the Hokies with three hits, and first baseman David Fitt and catcher Denny Hedspeth had two each.

In other college baseball:

In Richmond, Brian Pardue hit a two-run homer, but it wasn't enough as Radford dropped a 6-4 decision to Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond.

Starting pitcher Chad Langrehr took the loss for the Highlanders (6-6). Jeff Bounds picked up the victory for the Rams (14-3).

In Greensboro, N.C., Keith Mayhew went the distance as Ferrum edged Guilford 2-1.

Mayhew (2-0) gave up three hits, struck out nine and walked two for the Panthers (6-2). Ferrum scored its runs on a solo homer by outfielder Cal Scarce in the first inning and a sacrifice fly by Todd Cunningham in the second.

Guilford is 5-7.
