MONTGOMERY PAYS TRIBUTE TO TRUCKER WHO TRIED TO STOP KILLER

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors has honored the Pennsylvanian who died two weeks ago after trying to detain a killer at the Ironto truck stop.

The board adopted a "resolution of tribute" on Monday for Timothy Ruhl, the 29-year-old trucker who tried to stop Elbert L. Goodwin on Feb. 26, moments after the 55-year-old fatally wounded clerk Sandra K. Brown at the Lancer Truck Stop off Interstate 81.

Goodwin shot Ruhl in the neck before driving away and committing suicide near his home on Poor Mountain Road in Roanoke County.

Ruhl, of Mount Joy, Pa., died four days later.

The board "wishes to pay tribute to Timothy Ruhl, a brave man who was not afraid to risk his life in the name of justice and for the protection of others," the resolution states.

The board also extended its sympathies to the Ruhl family and provided the original of the resolution to them. A copy has become part of the official record.

The supervisors adopted the resolution as part of the consent agenda Monday night, meaning there was no discussion specifically about it.

The resolution went before the board at the suggestion of James P. Jones of Vinton. He called the county administrator's office and proposed it as a way of honoring Ruhl's heroism, a county staff member said.
