Special Olympics unit presents annual awards

Area 8 Special Olympics recently presented its annual awards to athletes, coaches and volunteers.

Walter Lawson of Roanoke was the outstanding coach. He coaches basketball, softball and soccer.

Barbara Quarles, an ice skater from Vinton, was the outstanding athlete. She was a member of the Virginia Ice Skating team in the 1993 International Special Olympics in Austria.

Paul, Judy, Gary and Dana Hylton of Salem received the outstanding family honor. Paul and Judy Hylton are volunteers, and their son, Gary, is involved in basketball, bowling, and equestrian sports. Their daughter, Dana, is a bowler.

Gary Gwynn, a coach and volunteer from Franklin County, received the Spirit of Special Olympics award, and Don Lazenby from Rocky Mount was the outstanding volunteer.

Students urged to write about organ donations

Virginia's Organ Procurement Agency is seeking elementary and high school students to enter an essay contest being held in conjunction with the observance of National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week April 17-24.

Students must express their ideas about organ donation, drawing from either personal experiences or opinions in the essay.

Students from grades two through six should enter category 1, with essays having 50 words or less. The winner will receive $50.

Students from grades seven through 12 should enter category 2, with essays having 500 words or less. The winner will receive $100.

Honorable mentions will be awarded to one essay from each grade.

The deadline for entries is April 8. Entries should be mailed to Virginias' Organ Procurement Agency, P.O. Box 20582, Roanoke, Va. 24018. Include your name, address, and the name of the school you attend.

Children's parade will be Saturday in Vinton

A bunny hop children's parade will be held Saturday at 10:45 a.m. in downtown Vinton.

Children are encouraged to dress-up in Easter costumes, decorate their bikes or tricycles, and participate in the parade. Participants will line up on Lee Avenue behind Vinton Baptist Church. Free kazoos will be provided.

The Vinton Association of Merchants and Professionals is sponsoring the parade.

After the parade, the Easter Bunny will meet participants at the Dogwood Restaurant for a free hot dog lunch. Free tickets for the lunch are available at the restaurant and the Vinton Messenger on Lee Avenue.
