MEETING FOCUSES ON STORM-DAMAGE AID|

Representatives from localities from throughout the New River Valley and as far east as Roanoke and Salem learned Friday what they must do to seek financial assistance from government agencies to fix storm damage.

The informational meeting was held at Radford University. It is one of six scheduled statewide by the Virginia Department of Emergency Services in the wake of two winter ice storms that rocked parts of Virginia.

Localities interested in applying for assistance filed notices of intent at the meeting. The notices will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Each county, town and city also had to schedule dates for federal inspectors to visit the locality and see some of the damage firsthand.

``We all have to justify why we want the money,'' said Assistant Blacksburg Town Manager Bonnie Svrcek.

That will take supporting paperwork as well as physical evidence to show the government inspectors, said Radford City Manager Robert Asbury Jr.
