A weekend symposium on Thomas ``Stonewall'' J. Jackson will be held the weekend of April 15-16 at the Stonewall Jackson House in Lexington.
The keynote lecture will be on April 15 by Joseph T. Glatthaar, a professor and chairman of the history department at the University of Houston. Glatthaar will speak on ``The Lee-Jackson Relationship.''
Other scholars and students of Civil War history will discuss these topics throughout the symposium: ``Jackson Through the Eyes of a Limey,'' ``The Right Sort of Man,'' ``Opportunity to the South: Jackson vs. Meade at the Battle of Fredericksburg,'' ``Stonewall Jackson's Library,'' ``T.J. Jackson's Health and 1850s Medicine Revisited,'' ``Stonewall Jackson's Wounding and Death,'' and ``Stonewall Jackson: The Making of a Hero and Persistence of a Legend.''
Registration for the symposium costs $135 and includes all lectures, admission to the Stonewall Jackson House, a reception on April 15, and morning coffee, lunch and beverages, dinner and a reception on April 16. Registration is due by April 8.

Science workshop
The Science Museum of Western Virginia will launch a new program ``Center Saturdays: Children's Science Workshops'' on weekends in April, May and June. Each workshop will feature a different science topic with a different age group in mind.
Pre-registration is recommended for the workshops, which cost $1 plus museum admission and are limited to 15 participants per workshop. For more information, call Miriam Langner at 342-5718.
Victory Garden
Jim Wilson and Lucinda Mays, hosts of public television's ``The Victory Garden,'' will present workshops on gardening on April 9 at Virginia Western Community College's Whitman Auditorium.
At 9:30 a.m., Mays will discuss gardening to attract native butterflies, and Wilson will talk about landscaping with flowers. Then, at 1:30 p.m., Mays will discuss using plants for color in gardens, and Wilson will discuss herbs for kitchen use and landscaping.

Guitar concert
Guitarist Christopher Parkening will play in Charlottesville on Friday at 8 p.m.
Parkening's concerts and recordings have received worldwide acclaim. Andres Segovia, who taught Parkening, hailed him not only as ``a great artist, but one of the most brilliant guitarists in the world.''

Volunteers needed
Virginia Special Olympics is recruiting volunteers to host dinner parties for the second annual Night of 100 Dinners to be held April 23. The event is part of a statewide effort to raise funds and increase awareness for the year-round sports training and competition programs for citizens with mental disabilities.
Dinner hosts are asked to donate a meal and open their homes to guests of their choice. Funds are raised through per-plate fees as determined by the host. People who agree to host dinner parties - whether back-yard barbecues or formal black-tie dinners - will receive invitations and materials to help with their plans.

Evolutionist to speak
Paleontologist and Harvard University professor Stephen Jay Gould will speak on ``The Evolutionary Perspective: Charles Darwin's Revolution in Thought'' on March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Virginia Tech's Burruss Auditorium.
Gould has been characterized by Rolling Stone magazine as both the most admired and resented scientist in the United States as co-author of the most important insight into how life evolved. He doesn't hold fast to either creationism or evolution but to a theory of punctuated equilibrium.
His lecture is free.
Train excursions
The Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will sponsor two scenic train excursions in April. Both will be powered by a Southern Railway steam locomotive No. 4501.
The first excursion leaves Kingsport, Tenn., on April 23 at 7:30 a.m. and travels to Norton and Appalachia via Clinchfield Railroad, Norfolk & Western Railway, Interstate Railroad and Southern Railway. The train will return to Kingsport at 7 p.m.
The second trip is on April 24 and leaves Kingsport at 7:30 a.m. en route to Asheville, N.C. The train will travel on Clinchfield Railroad and Southern Railway. The return time to Kingsport is 8:50 p.m.
Each trip costs $67 for a coach ticket, $110 for a deluxe ticket, which includes occupancy in the lounge car and a continental breakfast, and $140 for a premium ticket, which includes occupancy in the round-end car, continental breakfast and lunch in the dining car.
