TECH'S EDMUNDS SETS TRIPLE-JUMP RECORD

Virginia Tech freshman Detra Edmunds set a school record in the triple jump at the Wake Forest Relays in Winston Salem, N.C.

Edmunds finished second in the event with a leap of 37 feet, 6 inches, breaking the record of 36-11, set by Cecile Organ in 1991.

Senior Chris Williams led the Tech men's team, winning the pole vault at 16-7 1/2.

In Lexington, Washington and Lee's Harris Morrison won the pole vault, Dax Mahoney took the 400-meter dash, Scott Covey won the 400 hurdles and Grant Cowell won in the 800 run as the Generals' track team finished second behind Williams in the Washington and Lee Track and Field Invitational.

Behind freshman Courtney Fitch's victory in the long jump, Roanoke finished sixth in the 12-team field.

Bridgewater's Von Lewis, a Christiansburg High School graduate, won the high jump.

The Generals finished fifth in the 13-team women's field, and Roanoke was 10th. Williams also won the women's title.
