Cardwell also was selected to the all-state football team last fall. Cardwell, a 6-foot senior, averaged 18.3 points a game for the Raiders. He was the only Timesland player to be mentioned on the squad. team in Scoreboard.
St. Stephen's Ossie Jones, a 6-4 junior who averaged 23 points and 18 rebounds a game, was voted player of the year on the team. He and Cardwell were the only two repeat performers on the first team.
Benedictine's Warren Rutledge, the state's winningest high school coach with more than 700 victories, was voted coach of the year. His team lost to Bishop O'Connell 36-35 in the state championship game.

New VMI head football coach Bill Stewart and five new assistant coaches will get their first look at the squad on the playing field when the Keydets open their spring drills this afternoon.
The first practice will be conducted in shorts with the initial workout in pads slated for Wednesday. The 15th and final practice will conclude with a spring game on April 9 at Alumni Memorial Field in Lexington.
A new offense will be installed during spring practices. VMI will move to a multiple I formation after running the Wishbone the past five seasons.
The Keydets open the 1994 season Sept. 3 with a home game against Richmond.
