NOVELL BUYS WORDPERFECT, BORLAND'S QUATTRO PRO

In a two-part deal intended to give it a vast extension of its reach in software, Novell Inc. agreed Monday to acquire Wordperfect Corp., in a stock swap valued at $1.4 billion.

Novell will also buy Borland International's Quattro Pro spreadsheet business for $145 million.

The acquisitions would give Novell, already the leading provider of network operating system software, an instant stake in the market for application programs.

Wordperfect, based in Orem, Utah, had 1993 revenues of $700 million. Novell, based in Provo, Utah, had revenues of $1.12 billion. Analysts estimate 1993 sales of Quattro Pro at $70 million to $80 million.
