RECIPE CONTESTS CAN PUT YOU IN THE MONEY

Restaurant reviewer/cookbook author Dolores Kostelni says of recipe contests, "Usually, I dawdle over my recipe selection, the deadline passes and I remain where I began - daydreaming."

But last year she managed to break out of her reverie of spending the huge cash prizes she would win long enough to submit two entries to the National Pork Producers Council's "Give Us Your Best Chop, America!'' contest.

Recently, Kostelni received word that her "Pork Chops Campobasso" - named after the small town in Italy that her maternal grandfather left when he came to America during the 1890s - had earned an honorable mention as one of 25 runners-up among more than 5,000 pork chop presentations. It wasn't exactly the outcome she'd imagined, but still, she was thrilled.

She said that a grand prize of $1,500 was awarded for Mustard Grilled Pork Chops with Two Tomato Salsa; Mustard Baked Chops with Brie earned a $1,000 award; and Pork Chops With Pears, Blue Cheese and Green Peppercorns and Whiskey Pepper Chops with Molasses Butter garnered $750 each.

As we reported in the Jan. 19 edition of this newspaper, there's big money to be made - and big fun to be had - in recipe and other food-related contests. Here's an update on cooking contests underway this spring and a few winning recipes to get you started.
