No one was injured in the fire, which started around 6:30 a.m. in Crawford Hall, according to Teresa Thomas, director of media relations for the college.
Thomas credited the training and fast action of students and resident advisers for the lack of injuries.
The displaced students were given the option of staying with a friend on campus or staying in a motel, Thomas said. The college will offer a shuttle service to students who stay in the motel, she said.
The fire was confined to one room, but rooms throughout the third floor sustained smoke or heat damage or both. The first and second floors of Crawford Hall were not damaged and the 76 residents of those floors were to return to the building Wednesday night, Thomas said.
The college was working with the students to meet any immediate needs caused by the fire, including counseling.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Salem Fire Department.
Thomas said faulty wiring was ruled out as the cause.
