MORTGAGE RATES STILL ON THE RISE

Thirty-year, fixed-rate mortgages averaged 7.8 percent this week, up from 7.76 percent last week, according to a national survey released Thursday by the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. It was the highest level since the week that ended Feb. 5, 1993, when mortgages also averaged 7.8 percent. It also was more than 1 percentage point above the 25-year low of 6.74 percent lastOctober.

On one-year adjustable rate mortgages, lenders were asking an average initial rate of 4.6 percent, unchanged from last week. Fifteen-year mortgages averaged 7.3 percent this week, up from 7.27 percent. Associated Press
