CHARGERS TOP BISON IN BASEBALL

Bath County used a double play in the seventh inning to end a scoring threat and defeat Buffalo Gap 10-7 on Friday in a high school baseball game in Hot Springs.

The Bison (0-3) had a runner on second base with one out when a Buffalo Gap player struck out. The Chargers caught the runner trying to steal third base for the final out.

Third baseman Danny Woodzell smashed a two-run homer, his second homer in as many games for Bath County (2-0). Second baseman Kris Phillips had two hits.

Chargers' pitcher Ernie Beel threw for five innings, giving up four hits and one run and striking out three as he made the first start of his career and earned his first victory. Jon Rodgers picked up his second save of the season.

In other baseball:

Ben Basham went 3-for-3, including a double, a triple and three RBI, as Shawsville defeated visiting Craig County 7-4. Jason Smith struck out seven for the Shawnees (3-0). Duane Sowers had two hits and one RBI to lead the Rockets (3-3).

Andy Lambert knocked in three runs and Jeff Tucker went 2-for-3 with one RBI as Covington defeated James River 11-0 at Buchanan. The Cougars (1-1) amassed 14 hits in the rout. James River is 0-1.

\ SOFTBALL: In Buchanan, Kara Mundy pitched a two-hit shutout as James River routed Covington 16-0 in the opener for both Pioneer District teams.

Mundy struck out six, and Camille Arbogast went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Knights.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Billy Harwood scored two goals and Alan Bryant and Ian Fiorini combined for 12 saves as George Wythe blanked Marion 4-0 in a non-district game in Wytheville.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Amanda Bounds scored two goals, as did Ayisha Whitenack, and the Patrick Henry defense held Magna Vista to one shot in a 7-0 victory in Ridgeway. Patrick Henry is 2-0; Magna Vista is 0-1.
