Mike McGuire hit a three-run homer and also pitched six innings of seven-hit ball to earn the victory. Chris Carr pitched the seventh inning to record the save for William Byrd, which has beaten the Knights (0-2) in successive games.

David Henderson, Jake Weddle and Jason Anderson combined on a two-hitter as Glenvar blanked Northside 8-0 in a non-district game.
Henderson went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Anderson was 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the Highlanders (2-0). Northside is 1-1.
Charlie Hammersley hit a two-run triple to cap a six-run seventh inning as Salem (1-1) rallied to beat Christiansburg 9-8. Byron Gates hit a pair of home runs for Christiansburg (0-2).
In Rocky Mount, Riley Hodges and Scott Lynch homered to power Franklin County to a 12-6 victory over Heritage in a non-district game.
Hodges went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Lynch was 2-for-3 for the Eagles (1-1). The loss evened Heritage's record at 1-1.
Steve Campbell's double in the fifth inning drove in two Nelson County runs, and the Governors defeated Liberty 3-1 in a Seminole District game. Keith Carter had two of four hits for the Minutemen (1-2 overall and in the Seminole District).
In Daleville, Billy Arthur pitched a one-hitter as Lord Botetourt defeated Radford 5-1 in a non-district game. Arthur struck out 10 and walked seven in the Cavaliers' opener. Radford is 1-1.
Ben Basham went 3-for-3 including a double, a triple and three RBI, as Shawsville defeated visiting Craig County 7-4 in a non-district game. Jason Smith struck out seven for the Shawnees (3-0). Duane Sowers had two hits and one RBI to lead the Rockets (3-3).
\ SOFTBALL: Winning pitcher Blair Calvert had a double, a home run and three RBI as North Cross whipped Roanoke Catholic 13-1. Lisa Baetz hit a three-run homer for the Raiders (1-0).
Ronda Rankin struck out seven, walked one and gave up four hits as Salem defeated Cave Spring 3-0 in Salem. Erica Lokey went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Spartans.
Nikki Potter went 4-for-4 with a home run and a double to lead Franklin County to a 17-5 non-district victory over George Washington-Danville in Danville. Franklin County is 1-2.
In Buchanan, Kara Mundy pitched a two-hit shutout as James River routed Covington 16-0 in the opener for both Pioneer District teams. Mundy struck out six, and Camille Arbogast went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Shannon Yopp struck out 14 and had two hits to lead Northside to a 14-4 victory over host Patrick Henry in a non-district game. Emily Pecoul went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for PH (0-2). The Vikings are 2-0.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Danville, North Cross opened its boys' soccer season with a 3-0 victory over GW-Danville. Jamie Bell, Ry Moore and David Levan all scored goals for the Raiders. North Cross' defense was led by sweeper Bradley Bloom.
Michele Monrou and Kevin Graham had goals as William Fleming defeated Roanoke Catholic 2-0.
Keith Mattson scored two goals and had an assist as Franklin County edged GW-Danville 3-2 in Danville.
\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Amanda Bounds scored a pair of goals, as did Ayisha Whitenack, and the Patrick Henry defense held Magna Vista to one shot in a 7-0 victory in Ridgeway. Patrick Henry is 2-0; Magna Vista is 0-1.
