PROFESSOR STARTS SENATE RUN ON A SHOESTRING

A University of Virginia professor with a $100 campaign fund and no prior political experience is the latest person to step forward to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Robb.

Robert S. Brown, a professor of education and psychiatric medicine at UVa who also maintains a private psychiatric practice in Charlottesville, announced his independent candidacy Sunday.

"Being 62, I couldn't start at the lower levels and work up," Brown told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in a telephone interview.

Brown, an Army Reserve commander, plans to use relatives, friends, former students, fellow physicians and Army Reserve associates to help in his campaign. To qualify for the November ballot, he must collect signatures from 14,865 registered voters.

Brown said he opened a campaign account Saturday at Jefferson National Bank with a deposit of $100.

"That's all I have," he said cheerfully.

Brown joins a cast seeking to block Robb's re-election that already includes Jim Miller, Oliver North, Sylvia Clute and state Sen. Virgil Goode, D-Rocky Mount.
