SALEM WALLOPS BLACKSBURG

Salem jumped out to a nine-run lead after two innings en route to a 17-3 pasting of visiting Blacksburg (1-2) in high school baseball Tuesday.

Salem (2-1) collected 10 hits in the game, which was called after five innings. Brian Crosswhite was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a sacrifice fly and six RBI. Kevin Feazell (1-for-2) and Jimmy Archer (2-for-3) each drove in three runs. John Duffy allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one in five innings.

In other high school baseball: Rob Robinson was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in to help Glenvar (3-0) beat Parry McCluer 6-5. Shaam Wheeler had two hits and an RBI for Parry McCluer (0-1).

At Northside, the Vikings (3-1) beat Christiansburg 8-6 as Kevin Richardson and Scott Booth combined to drive in five runs. Richardson was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and Booth was 3-for-3 to support Jacob Hambrick (1-0), who struck out seven in five innings. Christiansburg is 0-3.

In Vinton, William Byrd's Chris Carr threw five no-hit innings, struck out 10 and got the victory in the Terriers' 8-0 rout of Radford (0-4). Mike McGuire's first-inning, three-run home run keyed the offense for Byrd (3-0). McGuire finished with four RBI and got help from Rich Ellis (2-for-4, two RBI) and Ryan Caya (2-for-2).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Forrest Porterfield had two goals and Eric Mull recorded a shutout as North Cross (2-0 overall, 1-0 VIC) defeated Miller School 4-0.

In Blacksburg, Steve Cherry and Chris Tyson scored as the Indians shut out Salem 2-0 behind goalie Ben Pinkerton. John Freeman and Gregg Adamo assisted on the goals for Blacksburg (2-0), which outshot Salem (1-1) 23-2.

\ SOFTBALL: Beth Drombetta had a double and Amy Vest doubled home a run as Cave Spring defeated Alleghany 4-2. Winning pitcher Mary Kallio is 2-0.

At Patrick Henry, Amy Dillon's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed the Patriots past Heritage 7-6. Each team is 1-2. Heritage took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth on a passed ball. In PH's frame, Tammy Lester reached on catcher's interference, Jeannie Linkenhoker doubled and Dillon followed with her game-winning hit. Winning pitcher Shelly King struck out 10.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Salem and North Cross opened their seasons with a scoreless tie at Salem. The Spartans' Heather Moore was denied despite firing 11 shots on goal. Salem goalie Angie Divers had 12 saves.
