Jen Roessler, Meredith Arnott and Julie Struthers each scored second-half goals, leading Roanoke College to a 3-0 win over visiting Ferrum in women's play. The Maroons (1-0-1) outshot the Panthers 35-3. Ferrum is 0-1.
Missy Gaitka and Kelly Reischer combined for seven goals as Radford's women walloped visiting Appalachian State 9-1 in their season opener. The match marked the first win for new Highlanders coach Lisa O'Brien, who replaced Don Staley.
Junior Che Henderson scored with 1:46 remaining to lift the Radford men's team to a 4-3 victory over Appalachian State (1-1). The Highlanders (2-0) rallied twice to tie in the second half before Henderson scored off a feed from Gerald Lakatos.
The under-12 age division of the Roanoke Star White (A division) finished second in the Williamsburg Cup Labor Day tournament. The team lost its only game by one goal in overtime after winning all four of their preliminary matches. Donny Smith and Raymie Equi each scored five goals for Roanoke in the tournament.
