NEW PROGRAM SUPERVISOR WANTS TO MEET YOU

JOY HERBERT is Blacksburg's new senior programs supervisor. Herbert came aboard Sept. 1 in the half-time Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department position. Seniors who would like to get acquainted can meet her during a potluck picnic today at noon at shelter 1 in Blacksburg Municipal Park.

Some folks already have had the pleasure during the Blacksburg Senior Discussion Group session her first day on the job. Seniors have another chance at the Blacksburg AARP meeting Sept. 20.

Herbert says she hopes to organize trips, including shopping and entertainment excursions, and a variety of other leisure and educational activities. She also plans to publish a bi-weekly newsletter for seniors.

A New River Valley resident for eight years, Herbert most recently worked as a health counselor for Nutri-System. She also has been a health counselor in Virginia Tech's cardiac rehabilitation program. She holds a master's degree in counseling from Virginia Tech. Seniors can call her at 961-1134.

A free seminar on TAX-FREE INVESTING is set for Sept. 19, 10:30 a.m.-noon, at the Giles Senior Center, 1320 Wenonah Avenue, Pearisburg. The session focuses on the advantages of tax-free investments. Materials include taxable equivalent yield charts, self-analysis worksheets and other useful literature. Hand-held calculators are recommended. Continental breakfast is available. SENIOR GATHERINGS

The Senior Athletes of Montgomery County meet today at 9 a.m. at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, Christiansburg.

A fall bowling league for seniors, age 55 and older, is forming at Triangle Lanes, N. Franklin St., Christiansburg. League play starts Sept. 14 with two-person teams and continues every Wednesday at 10 a.m. The cost is $3.75 a week. To sign up, call 382-2385.

The Virginia Center for Active Retirement sponsors a seminar, "Investing in the '90s," today, 10 a.m., at the Warm Hearth Village activities center. Terry Brizendine discusses diversification as a sensible strategy to maximize total return. Reservations, 231-5241.

The Walk-a-Roos Senior Walking Club meets Thursdays, 8 a.m., at Hardees, U.S. 460, Christiansburg. Members walk regularly and individually to reach a common goal. The new goal is Australia, 10,846 miles.

The New River Valley Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees meets Thursday at Stone's Cafeteria, Christiansburg. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.; the program starts at 12:15. CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

Sign language classes start Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 p.m., and continue every Tuesday for eight weeks at the center. Beginning Sign Language and Introduction to Intermediate Sign Language each cost $26. The beginning class is available for ages 12 and older. The intermediate class is for adults only. Call the center for information or registration.

The Hands Group for hearing impaired and signers resumes Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. There is no fee. Instructors are Kathleen Gilbert and Sonia Oliphant.

Travel to the State Farmer's Market in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday. Transportation is $4 and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 7 a.m.

A free blood-sugar screening is set for Tuesday, 10:30-noon.

Interim blood pressure checks follow senior aerobics Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the armory.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg, 382-5775:

RSVP seeks canning supplies for its annual apple butter jamboree. They'll peel apples and make final preparations Sept. 14, then start cooking around dawn Sept. 15 at Park United Methodist Church, Park Street, Christiansburg. The van pickup Sept. 15 starts at 8 a.m. The apple butter goes on sale during the annual Wilderness Trail Festival Sept. 17. To donate jars, lids, rings and sugar - or to volunteer to help peel, cook or clean up - call 382-5775.

Today, both Christiansburg groups help with a mailing at the courthouse: The morning group works at 10 a.m., and the afternoon group works at 2 p.m.

Monday, the Shawsville group has lunch at noon at White Memorial Church, Shawsville.

Tuesday, the Christiansburg group has lunch at noon at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Christiansburg.

Wednesday, all volunteers are needed to help peel apples starting at 9 a.m. at Park United Methodist Church.

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara star in "McLintock," the free movie Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Sign up for the trip to Mount Airy, N.C., to visit the outlet stores Sept. 16. Transportation is $2 and leaves the center at 9:15 a.m. Lunch is on your own at Libby Hill Seafood Restaurant.

Well-known Radford artist Lyndall Mason teaches watercolor classes Sept. 19 and 26, and Oct. 3, 10 and 17, 1-3 p.m. at the Radford Senior Center, 27 First St. Register by Sept. 14 at the center or the recreation office next door. It costs $35.

The center is closed Fridays.

Chances cost $1 on the tumbling blocks quilt made by the center's quilting group. Proceeds go to the van fund. The drawing is Oct. 19
