The nonconference win upped Villanova's record to 2-0. Liberty is 1-1.
With just under two minutes left, Liberty drove to the Villanova 39-yard line. But Lawrence Worthington fumbled and Villanova's Remo Guarinieri recovered. The Wildcats then ran out the clock.
Villanova ended with 369 yards of total offense and Liberty had 284. The Wildcats rolled up 246 yards on offense in the first half while limiting Liberty to 97.
The game was stopped for 11 minutes, 30 seconds in the third quarter because of a thunderstorm loaded with lightning. At the time, Villanova held a 16-3 lead, thanks to Curtis Sifford's two-yard touchdown run with 7:15 left in the period.
Daniel Whitehead kicked a 34-yard field goal to help Liberty cut the Villanova lead to 16-6 with 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Liberty made it 16-13 when Tony Dews picked up a fumble on the Villanova 2-yard line and scored with 6:34 left.
