TEACHER OF THE WEEK

For many teachers, summer means lounging around the pool, puttering around the house and taking a much-needed break from a classroom full of kids.

Not so for Terri Lowder. Lowder spent part of her summer driving from Buena Vista to Charlottesville, where she began work on a master's degree in reading. Although she said it was "tough giving up part of my summer," Lowder said keeping up with research and taking workshops and classes is an important part of her job as a teacher.

"I like getting and sharing new ideas with other teachers," Lowder said.

A 12-year teaching veteran, Lowder believes each child should be taught at his or her own level. "It's important to help each child find success and nurture individual talents," she said.

"Mrs. Lowder makes things interesting by explaining them well. She makes learning fun," said one of the people who nominated her as Teacher of the Week.

Married and the mother of two boys, Lowder enjoys reading, walking and shopping. She hates housework.
