A Wisconsin company has gone to Roanoke Circuit Court to collect a personally guaranteed debt from the operator of the Books, Strings and Things Inc. in Roanoke and Blacksburg.
Music Design Inc. of Milwaukee says in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that Richard Walters, president of the bookstores, signed a personal guarantee for an $18,343.81 debt. The bookstores have been operating on a month-to-month basis since April under protection of bankruptcy reorganization.
The Wisconsin company is seeking a judgment against Walters for the principal of the debt plus 1 1/2 percent interest dating from May 30.

First Union workers to help in schools
First Union National Bank of Virginia said Wednesday it will give paid time off to 165 employees to volunteer in Roanoke public schools.
Each of the employees will be able to volunteer up to four paid hours of time each month, plus an unlimited number of unpaid hours.
The partnership agreement was signed Wednesday by Chuck Saldarini, president of First Union's Roanoke-area operations, and Wayne Harris, school superintendent.
The partnership consists of four programs, in which volunteers will:
Work with sixth-grade students after school and Saturday mornings on reading, writing and math skills in preparation for the "literacy passport" test.
Read to second-grade students, encouraging them to dramatize a story and create a new ending.
Work to interest sixth-grade girls in math, science and high technology.
Work in several targeted schools, including Lucy Addison Aerospace Magnet School, Forest Park New American Magnet School and Crystal Spring Elementary School.

The board of Central Fidelity Banks Inc. on Wednesday named Lewis N. Miller Jr. as chairman and chief executive officer. Miller, 50, who was president and co-chief executive officer, has been with the company since 1972. He succeeds Carroll L. Saine, who died in August.
Shoney's Inc., a Nashville, Tenn., restaurant chain, has opened a unit of its Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken restaurants at 3519 Williamson Road, Roanoke. The restaurant, with a 60-seat dining room and drive-through service, features chicken, vegetables and salads. Mary Reeves and Kristi Crowder are managers of the new store.
