COMMONWEALTH GAMES AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Leonore McDaniels of Virginia Beach and James Kiser of Manassas are the 1994 Commonwealth Games of Virginia athletes of the year and will be honored Tuesday at the Governor's Mansion in Richmond.

Presentation of the award will be made by Susan Allen, the wife of Gov. George Allen.

McDaniels, 66, owns eight Commonwealth Games records in track and field. Kiser competes in track and power lifting.

A selection committee chosen by Virginia Amateur Sports, which runs the Games, picked the pair from a list of eight finalists. Criteria focused on sportsmanship, not on success in competition.

It is the first year VAS has given the award.
