NORTHSIDE HOLDS ON TO BEAT CHRISTIANSBURG

Northside jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and then hit nine free throws in the fourth to extinguish a late Christiansburg rally in holding on for a 57-52 victory in a non-district high school girls' basketball game Thursday night.

The Vikings (2-3) used their success at the free-throw line to turn a 36-36 third-quarter tie into a 12-point lead with a minute and a half remaining.

Kim Farrell led Northside with 10 points.

Chrystal Moles led all scorers with 18, and Maureen Jackson had 12 to pace Christiansburg (1-3).

Lord Botetourt 58

James River 20

Sara Moore had 14 points, Sarah Hicks added 12 and Summer Plunkett scored 10 as Lord Botetourt (6-1) routed visiting Botetourt County neighbor James River for the second time this season.

The Knights (1-4) were led by Angie Johnson's 11 points.

Blacksburg 46

BLACKSBURG - The Terriers' press wore down the Indians as William Byrd (3-2) outscored Blacksburg 22-9 in the third quarter to win the non-district game. Cathy Smith led the Terriers with 17 points, and Brandy Allen had 13.

April Rogers scored 11 for Blacksburg (2-5).

NEW CASTLE - Beth Burdett scored seven of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Shawnees over over the Rockets in a non-district game.

Chrissy Robertson led Craig County (0-3) with 18 points.
