CITY POLICE KILL FLOYD MAN

A hostage situation ended Sunday morning when Roanoke police fired on the gun-wielding suspect.

\ Roanoke police shot and killed a shotgun-wielding Floyd County man early Sunday after a tense two-hour standoff witnessed by scores of people along Roanoke's Williamson Road.

Police said four officers fired on Gary Wayne West, 34, after he aimed his gun at a police lieutenant. A medical examinier said Sunday that West had been shot nine times and his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
