``That appears to be his choice,'' said Mike Terrell, who will be Alexander's coach this year at Jordan High School in Durham, N.C. ``It's not official yet, but that probably will be the school.''
Terrell said preparations were under way for a news conference and that he was waiting to hear from UVa coach Jeff Jones to reaffirm the Cavaliers' interest.
Alexander, no relation to Virginia players Cory Alexander and Chris Alexander, averaged 29 points per game last season after moving to Durham from Monroe, Conn. One of his former basketball teammates at Jordan, Adrian Burnim, is a first-year football player at Virginia.
Alexander is related to former Duke All-American Grant Hill, the first-round draft pick of the NBA's Detroit Pistons. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski visited Alexander in his home, but the Blue Devils may have been hurt by a surplus of perimeter players, Terrell said.
Other coaches to visit Alexander's home have been from Arkansas, Duke, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. Alexander has not taken any paid, on-campus visits, but he has been to Virginia unofficially.
The only players to visit UVa officially are 6-10 Tom Wideman and 6-91/2 Scott Johnson, both from Marietta, Ga. Lorenzo Crutcher, Johnson's coach at Lassiter High School, said UVa is at the top of a list that includes Wake Forest, Indiana, N.C. State and Tennessee.
Alexander came to national attention with his play at the 1994 Nike Festival in Indianapolis. One service named him the No.3 prospect at the camp, and he has been rated the No.18 prospect in the country by Basketball America magazine.
Terrell, in his first year as head coach, said Alexander is a good student whose academic record indicates he will meet NCAA requirements on the Scholastic Assessment Test.
