RAIN FORCES CANCELLATION OF FCS RACES

For the second consecutive week, rain forced the cancellation of Saturday night racing at Franklin County Speedway.

Winston Cup driver Rick Mast and 18 Late Model entries turned out, promoter Whitey Taylor said. Mast, preparing for today's Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway, was in Callaway to meet fans and sign autographs.

FCS had staged 27 consecutive 1994 races before the rainouts. Action will resume next week.

SOCCER Roanoke men beat W&L 4-1

Roanoke College scored three second-half goals to get past Washington and Lee 4-1 in a men's soccer match at Lexington. Todd Hallauer's goal gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead at half, then Keith Arnott and Abraham Cortez scored early in the second half to make it 3-0. After Chad Dobbins scored to put the Generals on the board, Roanoke's Tres Moore scored to complete the scoring. Roanoke is 6-3, Washington and Lee is 2-3-1.

Emerson Umana scored two goals to give Ferrum's men's team a 4-2 win over Christopher Newport in a Dixie Conference match. Jeff Dufresne and Chris Cupo added goals for the Panthers (2-5, 1-1). Christopher Newport is 4-4, 0-2.

Unbeaten Winthrop beat Radford 2-1 in a Big South men's match at the Dedmon Center Stadium. Goals by Ian Pearson and Andrew Uglehus put Winthrop (7-0-1, 2-0) ahead 2-0 before Radford (4-3-2, 1-1) scored at the 84 minute, 41 second mark on a Lee Morton shot from an Ian Spooner pass. The match featured only 13 shots on goal, nine by the Highlanders.

VMI lost its Southern Conference opener 5-0 to Furman (3-4, 2-0). The Keydets (1-4-1, 0-1) were outshot 14-6.

Jenn Roessler scored both goals in Roanoke College's 2-0 women's soccer win at Maryville. Kara Hedges had seven saves in her second shutout for Roanoke (3-1-1). Maryville is 3-3-1.

Michele Kubicek's goal at the 60-minute mark of the match lifted Old Dominion to a 2-1 win over Radford in a women's match played at Dedmon Center Stadium. After the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead on Allison Carr's header off a corner kick nine minutes into the game, the Highlanders tied the score with a goal from Missy Gaitka. Radford (3-5) lost its third straight. ODU is 3-3.

Virginia Tech's women's team lost its second straight match after a 6-0 start with a 3-1 loss to Delaware in Blacksburg. The Fighting Blue Hens (6-1) led 3-0 before Tech's Courtney Sims scored off a deflection 85 minutes into the match.

Diane Rajca scored the winning goal at the 72:12 mark to give Kentucky (4-3) a 2-1 win over Virginia (4-1-2) in the first round of the Lanzera Invitational women's tournament at Charlottesville. In the second match, Harvard (1-0-1) defeated Davidson (1-4) 1-0.

In Wingate, N.C., Daniella Giusto made 18 saves, but it wasn't enough as the Ferrum women's team dropped a 2-1 decision to Tusculum in the Lady Bulldog Classic at Wingate College. Susan Sautter had the goal for the Panthers (2-4). Tusculum is 2-7.

ETC. Roanoke wins cross country title

Roanoke College's women's team won the college division championship and the Maroons' men's team took fourth place in the Greensboro (N.C.) Cross-Country Invitational meet Saturday.

The Roanoke women's team used its great balance to beat 13 other Division II and III schools in the college division. Lynn Schwehr finished 41st in the field of some 200 runners, which also included Division I contestants, to lead the Maroons' women. Roanoke's Ashley Dorr was 52nd, Sarah Wood 56th, Kate Gallagher 65th and Carolyn Haller 66th on the 3.1-mile course.

J.J. Maybury paced the Roanoke men with a fifth-place finish on a 5-mile course. Roanoke's Steve Crowder was 15th, Nathan Lang 20th, Jason Dick 23rd, Will Gibson 24th and Chris Overcash 26th. High Point (N.C.) College won the team title in the 15-team Division II-III field.

Virginia Tech's men took five of the top six places to cruise to the championship of the VMI Cross Country Invitational at Lexington. Tech's Matt Zacharias won the race in 25:37.47 and was followed by teammates Mike Cox, John Hawthorne and Tom Lankowicz in second-through-fourth place. The Hokies scored 16 points, followed by Marshall with 51 points.

Virginia placed four runners in the top seven to win the women's portion of the VMI Invitational. Josephine Schaeffer of second-place Washington and Lee won the women's race in 19:25.84, more than 1:25 ahead of second-place Tracey Freyre of Virginia.

Sandy Hooper finished second and Jason Callen was third to lead the Washington and Lee men's cross country team to a second-place finish behind Kutztown at the Dickinson College Open in Carlisle, Pa.

Glenvar's Trish Nervo and Covington's Chris Merrell were the individual winners during the Blue Ridge Invitational high school cross country meet at William Byrd. Merrell covered the 2.9-mile course in 15:27 to win the boys' Orange division, which featured the meet's top runners. Nervo, the two-time Group A individual champion, won the girls' race in 17:37. Patrick Henry's Bill Speas won the boys' Maroon division in 16:48.

Cave Spring won the team title in the boys' Orange division, Gretna was first the Maroon division, and Brookville won the girls' meet.

Christiansburg's boys edged Dobyns-Bennett by four points to win the Marion Invitational at Hungry Mother State Park. Kevin Nolan finished second to lead the Blue Demons, who placed three runners in the top 10. Christiansburg finished second to Dobyns-Bennett in the girls' competition. Abingdon's Colleen Crawford won the girls' race in 18:20.

A team of Roanokers lost twice in the men's 3.5 United States Tennis Association National Championship in Palm Springs, Calif. Roanoke lost 4-1 to a team representing the City of Industry, Calif. and dropped a 5-0 decision to a San Jose squad.

In the first match, the doubles team of Earl Harrell and Steven Kanetzke posted Roanoke's only win by beating Joe Bautista and Louis Delavega 7-6, 6-4. In singles play, Thomas Hilts lost 6-0, 6-0, and Tom Bailey was beaten 6-1, 7-5. In doubles play, Frederick Dickerson and Jack McKinney los6-2, 6-2, and Raymond Lingle and Joseph Wheby lost 7-5, 5-7, 6-0.

In the loss to San Jose, Kanetzke lost 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and Wheby fell 6-1, 7-6 in singles play. In doubles, Jay Mathews and Dwain Ornduff beat Lingle-McKinney 6-1, 6-0, Harrell and Hilts lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 and Bailey and Dickerson lost 6-2, 6-2.

In Salisbury, N.C., Lee Moody scored Roanoke College's only goal as the Maroons dropped a 3-1 decision to Catawba in field hockey. Ali Oglesby assisted on the goal for Roanoke (3-1). Catawba is 2-1.

Nick Varney fired a 75 and Ray Harrell, Tommy Lesperance and Andy Lesperance each shot a 76 for Glenvar's team total of 310 to beat Highland by 27 strokes in a Pioneer District match. Highland's Eric Hook earned medalist honors with a 72 on the par-70 Needle's Eye course in Monterey.
