Four second-half goals helped the No.7 Tar Heels cruise to victory.
Virginia (6-2 overall, 2-1 ACC) has not suffered a worse defeat since losing 4-0 to Clemson in the 1980 season. It was the first time UVa lost to the Tar Heels in 11 meetings.
With the victory, UNC (6-2, 1-1) has defeated the nation's top- and second-ranked teams in September. The Tar Heels beat Indiana 2-1 earlier this month in Bloomington, Ind.

In Blacksburg, Kenley Osborne scored off a pass from Heather Moore of Salem as Virginia Tech defeated Old Dominion 1-0 in women's soccer. Penny Goode and Hope Handley combined for the shutout in goal for the Hokies (7-2).
In Radford, Kate Townsley's goal as time expired gave Delaware a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Radford. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Highlanders (3-6). Kelly Moran scored Radford's goal.
In Ashland, Brad Benson scored two goals to lead Randolph-Macon to a 3-2 victory over Ferrum in men's soccer. Kevin Chenowski and Casey Grimes scored the goals for the Panthers (2-6). Randolph-Macon is 6-2-1.
In Charlottesville, Kim Smith scored goals in each overtime period as Virginia defeated Harvard 2-0 in women's soccer. The Cavaliers (5-1-2) permitted Harvard only two shots on goal, none after the first half.
K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke was eliminated from the semifinals of the Mid-Atlantic Championship Boys' 16 tournament at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Fourth-seeded Tony Hurr of Potomac, Md. defeated Hippensteel 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Hippensteel, a wild-card entry, won three matches Saturday, and beat Luke Grimshaw of Frederick, Md., 6-0, 6-1 on Sunday before meeting Hurr.
