What would you do to enforce tougher child support legislation? Would you consider enacting a bill similar to the one the state of Maine currently has?
- Rebecca Lacey, Roanoke
Background: Maine recently passed a law that revokes the drivers' licenses - as well as businesses licenses - of parents who refuse to pay overdue child support.
COLEMAN: "I support tough child support legislation, but I believe it should remain at the state level rather than imposing a single federal law on all 50 states. The federal government can help, though, by cooperating in establishing national databases that help locate child support deadbeats who cross state lines."
NORTH: "I support tougher child support legislation. Welfare reform should wipe the term 'dead-beat dad' from our vocabularly. While I should not want to endorse the specifics of any state bill, I believe states such as Maine who are adopting tougher child support legislation are moving in the right direction."
ROBB: "I support strengthening current child support laws and have consistently voted for measures to do so. Like you, I believe that 'dead-beat' penalties should be harsh. On the federal level, we need to ensure that law enforcement agencies have the abiity to enforce laws across state and international lines. I've co-sponsored legislation to impose a criminal penalty on parents who flee the state to avoid child support payments and supported a bill to improve interestate enforcement of child support and parentage court orders."
