PATRIOT MAKER TURNS TO TRAINS

Raytheon Co. is turning its manufacturing expertise to passenger trains as it continues to adapt to a post-Cold War world and make up for the loss of its contract to build the Patriot missile.

Raytheon said Monday it has selected a Fall River, Mass., site where it hopes to manufacture trolley cars for Boston and high-speed trains for Amtrak.

With defense spending shrinking, Raytheon spokeswoman Elizabeth Allen said, such diversification is critical. The $9.2 billion company said half its business now involves projects that are not defense-related.
