CHARLOTTESVILLE - A developer has been cleared by a judge to sell land for a Formula One racetrack at the Brandy Station battlefield, site of the Civil War's largest cavalry battle.
The developer, Elkwood Downs Limited Partnership, is expected to sell 425 acres in the historic area to Benton Ventures Inc. of Bethesda, Md., by mid-October. The sale was approved Monday by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge William E. Anderson. Elkwood Downs filed for bankruptcy last year.
The Brandy Station Foundation, a preservation group, vowed to continue to fight the auto racing track.

Byrd sets up scholarship fund
RICHMOND - Former U.S. Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. announced Tuesday the establishment of a fund to award $2,500 annually to a high school senior from each of the state's 11 congressional districts.
Byrd said the cash awards will not be based solely on academic achievement. He said ``the nebulous qualities of leadership'' will be a major consideration.
