ALLEGHANY SWAMPS BATH CO.

Alleghany bolted to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 51-26 victory over Bath County in girls' high school basketball Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers (5-4) extended their lead to 33-13 at halftime. Tracey Cummings led Alleghany with 14 points.

Bath County (0-8) got a team-high 11 points from Katie Hardbarger.

Tuesday's games

Northwood 73, George Wythe 71: In Saltville, the Maroons overcame an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes and had two chances to tie the score before losing a Hogoheegee District game.

George Wythe (5-3, 1-3) took a 39-33 halftime lead by virtue of a strong second quarter, but turnovers hurt the Maroons in a sloppy third quarter.

Lisa Garland led George Wythe with 21 points. Alethea Lemieux and Tonya Cregger had 13 points each, and Megan Johnson added 12.

Northwood was led by Jill Woodward's 21 points.

Patrick County 60, Magna Vista 52: In Ridgeway, Amy Nelson scored 17 points and Angie Noonkester added 10 to help the Cougars defeat the Warriors in a Piedmont District game.

Patrick County used a man-to-man press in the first half to hold Magna Vista to 17 points, then held on for the victory.

The Warriors (7-3, 4-3) were led by Tanesia Kellam, who scored a game-high 23 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville 87, Dan River 39: In Ringgold, Cicely Becker scored eight of her game-high 25 points in the third quarter as the Cavaliers outscored the Wildcats 28-4 and went on to an easy Piedmont District victory.

Fieldale-Collinsville (5-3, 4-3) switched to a 1-3-1-1 full-court press in the third quarter and forced 41 turnovers overall. The Cavaliers got 11 points from Jennifer Floyd and 10 from T.J. Hayes.

Dan River got 15 points from Teri Counter and 12 from Deanti Giggets.

Rural Retreat 59, Holston 41:In Damascus, Beth Ketner scored 12 points and Tanya Tarter had 10 to help the Indians (6-2, 4-2) defeat the Cavaliers (0-8, 0-6) in the Hogoheegee District.
