WILDLIFE ASSOCIATION KEEPING CONTROL OF CAMP MITCHELL

Camp Mitchell, a Craig County recreation site, will remain under the jurisdiction of the Craig County Wildlife Association.

After a recent meeting with leaders of the wildlife association, the Craig County Board of Supervisors asked its attorney, James Cornwell, to prepare a new contract leasing the property to the association.

In August, about 50 people turned out for a supervisors' meeting to discuss a rumor that the supervisors planned to terminate the county's lease and turn the 10-acre Camp Mitchell property over to the county industrial development authority.

At that time, the supervisors expressed concern that the wildlife association had insulated itself from the supervisors in the operation of Camp Mitchell. The supervisors complained that they often did not know what was happening at the camp in regard to activities, finances and the condition of the property, which includes a lodge building and swimming pool.

Zane Jones, supervisors chairman, said Craig County owns Camp Mitchell and the board of supervisors is ultimately responsible for it.

Tom Wilson, the new association president, promised to keep supervisors better informed about the camp, which is on Virginia 615 north of New Castle. The camp, named for Dr. Walton F. Mitchell, a Craig physician for many years, has been used for Scout meetings, family reunions, various types of club meetings, athletic camps and community dances.
