McDOWELL, Mary Elizabeth Bailey, 78, of 1306 Peach Ave., South Boston, Va.
died Saturday, January 1, 1994, at her home. She was born in Charlotte County,
Va. on February 8, 1915, and was the daughter of Mr. Robertson Anthony Bailey
and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr.
Jack Randolph McDowell Sr. Mrs. McDowell was a member of First Baptist Church
of South Boston; a member of and founded board member of the YMCA; she
received the Woman of the Year Award from the Jr. Woman's Club in 1975; a
member of the DAR, Tuesday Woman's Club and graduated from Longwood Teachers
College. She is survived by two sons, Jack R. McDowell Jr. of Boca Raton,
Fla., James A. McDowell Sr. of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Catherine Sheally
of Farmville, Va., Sue Brockwell of Richmond, Va., Dorothy Canada of Phoenix,
Va.; four grandchildren, Mary Margaret McDowell, James McDowell Jr., Laura
McDowell, Jessica McDowell. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Bailey
McDowell will be held Monday, January 3, 1994, 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church
with the Rev. Dr. Mark Olson conducting the service. Burial will take place in
Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home 1306 Peach
Ave. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to please consider the South
