Fame never seemed more fickle than in 1993. Icons we thought would be forever ``in'' - Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Carson, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Jim Florio - were out, out, out! And those who we thought could never, ever be in, such as Howard Stern, Lyle Lovett, Meat Loaf, Beavis and Butt-head, and Janet Reno, were suddenly larger than large, more in then even they could imagine.
It's as if the nerds took over the high school and the popular kids were banished to study hall.
It was also the year that everybody got a talk show, Sharon Stone got overexposed, Lani Guinier got deep-sixed, Marla Maples finally got her man, Heidi Fleiss got the goods on Hollywood, fitness guru Susan Powter got too thin and too rich, David Letterman got even, Reno got tough, Shannen Doherty got a life, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason got the Washington shaft, Ken got fey, Ted Danson got his (as if Whoopi Goldberg wasn't punishment enough) and John Wayne Bobbitt got the unkindest cut of all.
And, shades of Watergate, we had Nannygate, Ed Rollinsgate, the Packwood diarygate and the biggest shocker of all - Michaelgate.
On the music charts rose gangsta rappers, nasty do-wop boy groups, Whitney and Mariah, plus a wave of alternative music. On the runways came designer blasts from the far and near past, clothes based on religious garb, and schoolgirl fashions that even real schoolgirls don't want to wear. In establishing what was in, designers seemed ignorant of the fact that many women thought they were out - of their minds.
Pop culture has its dark side, too. Uzis are out; kids are carrying cheaper and smaller Rugers on the streets and in schools. Designer drugs are out; users are turning to heroin as their drug of choice.
Enough already. This could get depressing.
From those who stand watch over the prisoners of pop culture comes this highly personal view on what's sizzling and who's chilling, what's making it and what's outta here.
Drum roll, please.
