Sweets did the trick to capture errant zebra

DINWIDDIE - Michelle the zebra, who had been roaming the Dinwiddie County countryside since Friday, was lured back into captivity with a bucket of molasses-sweetened feed.

Michelle was found trotting eastbound along U.S. 460 about 5 p.m. Wednesday, said Herman Harrison, her owner. Searchers had been following the zebra since about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

"She saw the sweet feed and went for it," Harrison said. "She was hungry."

Michelle escaped from her pen Friday night after being spooked by a group of children. - Associated Press

\ 400 state employees apply to keep jobs

RICHMOND - About 400 of the 450 state workers who got letters from Gov.-elect George Allen requesting their resignations have applied to keep their jobs, Allen said.

"Many of them attached notes suggesting how their agency could be run better," Allen said Wednesday. "They said the Wilder administration had ignored their ideas."

The applications will help Allen's administration evaluate which workers to retain, he said.

Allen's letter provoked an outcry in the state bureaucracy from workers whose positions traditionally were insulated from political considerations.

Gov. Douglas Wilder, whose term expires Jan. 15, issued an executive order directing employees to ignore Allen's call for their resignations. Allen backed off on the resignation demand but invited employees to apply if they wanted to keep their jobs. - Associated Press

Turner pleaded guilty Tuesday to 10 counts of grand larceny. She had her $100,000 bond revoked and was sent to jail pending a March 14 sentencing hearing. - Associated Press
