Caltgiarone was hired to try and give Staunton River a winning program. Caltgiarone, at the time, was an assistant coach at Jefferson Forest, which had been successful under coach Bob Christmas.
"He's an exceptionally good teacher and has worked diligently with our program. We certainly are appreciative of his efforts on our children's behalf. At this time, he plans to continue teaching at Staunton River and we're delighted he plans to stay," Staunton River principal Bob Ashwell said.
Because he had been a full-time teacher in the Bedford County system for only two years, Caltgiarone had not received tenure status, meaning the school was not obligated to keep him as a teacher when he resigned as football coach.
Caltgiarone, a health and physical education teacher at Staunton River, did not return calls Monday.
Staunton River, a member of the Seminole District, which is regarded as the state's toughest Group AA district in football, was 4-6 in the first year under Caltgiarone. It was the only time in four years of membership in the Seminole District that the Golden Eagles won more than one game in a league where teams play 10 district opponents a year.
This season, the Golden Eagles went 0-10. Four of the losses were by less than a touchdown.
