EX-NL CHIEF FEENEY DIES AT 72

Chub Feeney, who as the National League president stood firm in his opposition to the designated hitter, died Monday of a heart attack. He was 72.

Feeney, the NL president from 1970-86 and a former general manager of the New York Giants, entered California Pacific Hospital last Tuesday after a heart attack and subsequently had a second heart attack, hospital spokeswoman Ann Batmale said.

Feeney worked for the Giants from 1946 until 1970, rising to general manager and overseeing the team's move to San Francisco in 1958. He succeeded Warren Giles as NL president in 1970 and retired when A. Bartlett Giamatti took over Dec. 31, 1986.
