IN OTHER CITY COUNCIL ACTION

BALLPARK BOOED IN GAINSBORO: Two leaders in the Gainsboro neighborhood said they oppose construction of a stadium near Hotel Roanoke. Helen Davis said the proposed ballpark reflects "a very cruel and insensitive" attitude toward the neighborhood. Davis and her sister, Evelyn Bethel, criticized Councilman Delvis "Mac" McCadden and businessman Dale Wilkinson for proposing the stadium. Despite the criticism, McCadden said he still hopes to meet with Gainsboro residents. McCadden said he is interested in the proposed stadium because it would provide a place for the city's children and high schools to play baseball and football.

SUPPORT FOR EXPLORE PARK: Gary Foutz, a former council candidate, urged support for Explore Park and Mill Mountain Zoo, saying they could be an economic boon for the city. "We need to stop living in the stone age," Foutz said, adding he was encouraged by Mayor David Bowers' recent support for Explore. "The problem here is that nobody wants to change, and the four valley localities act like they are four countries," he said.

INDUSTRIAL PARK STORM-WATER SYSTEM: Contracts totaling nearly $2.4 million were awarded for a drainage system in the Statesman Industrial Park on Orange Avenue, next to the Roanoke Centre for Industry and Technology. Businesses and industries in Statesman long have complained about drainage problems.
