JEFFERSON FOREST DUO LEADS WAY IN 70-62 VICTORY

Ryan Gilleland and Anthony Poindexter combined for 55 points Tuesday night as Jefferson Forest won a Seminole District basketball game 70-62 over Staunton River.

Gilleland had 32 points, including 10 in the decisive fourth quarter. Eighteen of his points came on 3-pointers. Poindexter had 23.

Jefferson Forest led by two points entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Golden Eagles 27-21 to seal the victory.

Cornelius Foxx had 27 points for Staunton River (3-4 overall and in the district), and Geoff Zimmerman and Jeff English added 12 each. \

Auburn 85

Galax 52 GALAX - Jon Reed scored 19 points and Terry Millirons had

18 to lead the Eagles to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide.

Auburn (7-1, 6-1), which also got 14 points from Randy Bonds, dominated the rebounding in the first half over sluggish Galax (3-4, 3-2). The Tide trailed 35-19 at halftime.

Jeff Ross led Galax with 18 points and eight rebounds. \

Graham 62

Radford 48

RADFORD - The G-Men bolted to an 18-point lead at halftime and beat the Bobcats in a non-district game.

Ryan Brittle led Radford (3-8) with 21 points and Casey Underwood added 15, but the Bobcats were unable to overcome a 31-13 halftime deficit.

Radford cut its deficit to seven points in the second half, but got no closer. \

Pulaski County 66

Heritage 48

LYNCHBURG - Ty Hash scored 23 points as the Cougars roared past the Pioneers in a non-district game.

Pulaski County (3-4) held a 34-16 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Jammon Payne had 11 points and Jason Lawson added 10 for the Cougars, who hit 60 percent of their field-goal attempts (23 of 38).

Lewis Tardy had 14 points to lead Heritage.

ROCKY GAP - The Eagles took control in the first half and notched a Mountain Empire District victory over the Shawnees despite 26 points from Darrell Bibb of Shawsville.

Frank Nunley had 15 points and 8 rebounds to lead Rocky Gap (2-6, 2-4). Will Dodson added 12 points.

Shawsville (0-8, 0-6) trailed 33-24 at halftime. The Shawnees got 9 points and 10 rebounds from Jeremy Nichols. \

Floyd County 74

Narrows 60

FLOYD - The Buffaloes overcame early foul trouble for shot-blocker Jason Light to defeat the Green Wave in the Mountain Empire District.

Light committed his second foul early in the game and sat out the rest of the first half as Floyd County (6-1, 5-1) built a 39-32 lead. Light came back strong in the second half, scoring 12 points and blocking eight shots.

Jamie Warren led the Buffaloes with 20 points. Brian Harman contributed 16 points, seven assists and four steals.

Patrick Bailey scored a game-high 22 points for Narrows (1-6, 1-4). Scott Vaught added 16. \

Pocahontas 89

Carroll County 69

HILLSVILLE - Pocahontas raced to a 33-point halftime lead and buried Carroll County in a non-district game.

Shannon Dawson had 26 points for Pocahontas (6-1). Carroll County (2-4), which cut 13 points off the lead in the second half, was led by John Woolford with 17 and Jason Kilbourne with 11.

Jason Keaton added 20 and Tim Cook and Jon Rash 13 each for Pocahontas.

Bland 59

PEARISBURG - Mitch Reed's layup with two seconds left in overtime gave Giles a Mountain Empire District victory over Bland.

With six seconds left, Reed inbounded to Marty Smith, who tossed back to Reed for the winning score. Kevin King's halfcourt heave was way off.

Bland's Shannon Havens tied the score at 57 in regulation by making one of two free throws with about a minute left, and the teams traded turnovers after that. Giles (1-3 overall, 1-2 in the district) had the final possession but lost the ball out of bounds as time expired.

Both teams missed free throws assiduously. Giles was 10-for-25 from the line and Bland (4-5, 3-3) was 14-for-30.

Smith led Giles with 15 points; Bucky Burton and Patrick Steele each had 10. Havens had 21 and King 14 for Bland. \
