THUMPIN' FOR WOMEN

One of the highlights of New Woman magazine since 1972 has been found on a single page toward the back of the monthly publication. Today, it's an 83-page book titled ``Sounds Like a New Woman: A Decade of New Women and Thumps on the Head'' (Penguin Books, $8.95).

Celebrities who have sounded off on what a New Woman is - and is not - are there. For example:

Sounds Like A New Woman: ``The term `working mother' is redundant.'' - Erma Bombeck.

``You're not a man if you can make a baby, you're only a man if you can raise a baby.'' - The Rev. Jesse Jackson.

``I am an actor; I don't understand actress. You don't call doctors `doctoresses' or `doctorettes.`'' - Whoopi Goldberg.

A Thump on the Head to: ``The ultimate authority needs to be the husband.'' - evangelist Pat Robertson.

``I don't ordinarily allow anyone to use that `Ms.' in this courtroom. What if I call you sweetie?'' - Hubert Teitelbaum, federal judge, to attorney Barbara Wolvovitz.

``Feminism was established to allow unattractive women access to mainstream society.'' - talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

And, from our own Sounds Like a Confused Woman category:

``The truth is that women aren't interesting before 30. Men are kind of born people.'' - actor Jodie Foster, 1991.

``I'm really sick of people apologizing for feminism as if it would leave nasty stains. Feminism is one of the greatest humanisms. It's about making the world more human'' -Jodie Foster, 1992.
